2020 NM Middle School Honor Jazz

Every February, LAJP hosts a state-wide Middle School Honor Jazz Bands event.

General Information

  • Carefully read all information on the Audition Registration Form

  • Regular registration deadline: November 1, 2019

  • A late fee of $10 will be charged for every audition that is registered after 11/1/19

  • Audition submission deadline is November 15, 2019

  • Two bands will be formed from the pool of audition submissions

  • The Middle School Honor Jazz Ensembles will have a traditional big band instrumentation w/ a few exceptions; only the following instruments will be accepted:

    • 2 altos, 2 tenors, 1 bari, 4 trombones, 5 trumpets, 1 guitar, 1 piano, 1 bass, 1-2 drummers

    • Flute & vibes auditions may be considered as well.  Students auditioning on vibes should do only vibes, not drums and vibes.  Drum students should only audition on drums, not vibes as well

Submission Procedure

  • Record each student in digital video via smartphone, tablet computer, or other appropriate device. Make one recording for each student.

  • Upload each recording to YouTube, setting status to “Unlisted”.

  • Submit auditions via email to Ryan Finn at losalamosjazzproject@gmail.com.

  • On separate lines in an email, enter each student's name, school and instrument followed by the YouTube link (web address, url).

Audition Procedure

  • The swing etude and improvisation recordings must be played along with the backup track available online at losalamosjazzproject.com.  Please note there are separate tracks for winds/vibes, piano/guitar, bass, and drums.  Tempos: Etude - 120, Improv - 144

  • For each audition recording announce (1) the student's name, (2) grade, (3) school and (4) instrument. Directors please be in sight of the camera to help maintain the integrity of the recording process. Students should not talk during the recording. Directors may announce the audition components during the recording.

  • Review recordings carefully before submitting. Verify that the sound is of sufficient quality to validly represent the student's true abilities.

Recording Order

  1. Winds/Piano/Guitar/Bass/Vibes: Chromatic scale, ascending and descending. 
    Drums: Basic rock or bossa nova beat, 16 bars, with metronome, quarter = 120

  2. Swing Etude, m. 1-24 - A & B are required, C is optional. Record along with the backup track.

  3. Now’s the Time head with two (2) choruses of solo, totaling 36 measures (12 head, 24 solo) recorded with backup track.
